Hong Ning Chinese Aged Home was established over 28 years ago to take care of Chinese senior citizens in South Africa. The main purpose and motivation behind the opening of an aged home still very prevalent today are due to the following reasons:
- due to the apartheid system & discriminatory laws which enforced segregation Chinese could not reside in any old age home facilities because of Chinese descent
- many elderly Chinese living in pathetic and poor conditions and in dire need of assistance
- some have no family or relatives to take care of them or any financial means to support themselves
- many resident’s surviving family members or relatives have emigrated and could not afford to take their elderly folk with them
Hong Ning is a registered welfare and fund-raising entity incorporated as a Section 21 Company Not for Gain. Hong Ning is also a Non-Profit Organisation with the Department of Social Development. Through fundraising, donations and sponsorships received by Hong Ning is vital to ensure we keep the doors open and continue to provide an essential service to our community.
Hong Ning now enjoys full community support and is home to over forty five residents. The Home has currently a staff complement of 26 personnel ably run by Sister Maureen Lai Yat - Matron in Charge The Home provides full nursing care and attention in a secure and happy environment. A Frail Care Unit for a total of 8 residents was opened in December 2002 and has been operating at full capacity since then. Predominantly Chinese food is served & Chinese culture is preserved and encouraged. Many organizations both local and overseas, business men and women, churches, schools, sport associations and other various culture groups and individuals support Hong Ning through their financial efforts and material donations, fundraising events and also by their frequent visits to the Home.
Hong Ning Chinese Aged Home is unique in that it is the only Chinese home for senior citizens in the whole of Southern Africa. The Home is strongly promoted as a community project and receives no state subsidy or any other form of financial assistance. An Executive and Management committee of fifteen members manage the Home on a voluntary basis. Committee members are drawn from various Chinese associations, organizations, churches, schools, sports and cultural groups in order to have as wide a representation as possible. We Thank the community for placing their God given gifts, talents, perseverance and commitment in serving Hong Ning.
Hong Ning relies heavily on the community for their support be it in cash or kind and through ongoing fundraising projects, sponsorships, networking and partnerships built up over the years. We are currently expanding the Frail Care Unit because of the urgent need of this facility. The expansion project which will cost in the region of R 750 000 is nearing completion. A further 20 plus beds can now be added and will serve the community well into the future. We still need urgent financial assistance as we have utilized our internal cash reserves and now urgently need to replenish our cash resources. Kindly support Hong Ning through your financial donations to the Frail Care Expansion Building Fund.
